In Indian households, key rings have been used to
hold safe deposit and money box keys as well as
keys to grocery supplies. In times past, many people
were required to assist in the kitchens and supply
areas in the homes of royalty and the wealthy. The
most senior lady of the house held these keys, either
tucked into her waist or attached to the corner
of traditional garments, so that there was no question
as to misuse of food supplies and other important
items.
At night, the key ring would be kept under her pillow
and when a new daughter-in-law was brought into
the family, the keys were passed on to her as a
symbol of passing responsibility on to the next
generation. The lady of the house who carried the
keys was considered the most responsible and powerful
person in the household and nothing would move without
her permission.
